Evaluation of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation for Pain Relief

Abstract
Twenty four patients suffering from arthritis and traumatic musculoskeletal conditions were studied to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in relief of pain and accompanying muscle spasm and limited range of motion.
Before and after application of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation by electromyogram, skin temperature, range of motion and results of a subjective pain evaluation were recorded.
Statistically a significant difference were found at p<.01 in all parameters except range of motion studied.
The results suggest that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a valuable therapeutic modality for some patients with pain.
